Rent control basics

Some things you might not know:

  1. Your rent might still go up – rent control is just a parameter on the amount a landlord can increase your rent, when your lease comes up for renewal.

  2. Check income restrictions – Usually rent control doesn’t mean that there is cap on how much your yearly earnings are to live in a specific property. However, there can be outliers. Best thing to do is be proactive and check your local rules and regulations to make sure you’re eligible for rent control status.

  3. Double check your building’s status – Your city’s rent board can be an unbiased third party to talk with if your landlord isn’t providing clear information.

  1. Los Angeles Rent Control telephone number at (866) 557-RENT to ensure that a specific unit is under the jurisdiction of the rent control laws.

  2. Where do you live? There is rental control law in place in Los Angeles city, as well as West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica. However, nearby cities Downey, Pasadena, Torrance, Burbank, and Glendale do not have rent control laws.
